Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, who led his team to its first playoff win in franchise history last week, is the hottest player in the world of sports at the moment, and that also translates to some high demand for autographs. But an issue, some in the industry believe, is the similarities between this and a certain 18-year-old phenom who also remains unsigned at the moment.
Longtime autograph collector Kevin Rowland said that he was contacted by a collector in Utah seeking an autograph from a Doncic signature and a similar request on LeBron James. Rowland was unimpressed, saying he didn’t find any professional similarities between the two, asking the collector to identify which record Doncic, 18, would break in his rookie season and asking who James, 33, has been compared to. Neither suggestion worked.
“The parallels to Kyrie Irving are so thin,” Rowland said, noting that Irving, 23, has already broken many records for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He added, “The only comparison is the fact that they’re still teenagers.”
Scott Brocato, an NBA entrepreneur and memorabilia businessman in New York, said, “I asked him how much it would cost for an autograph from Luka and he said, ‘Enough to pay for a meal.’”
