(CNN) — Alec Baldwin’s adopted daughter is battling cancer. A day after the actor’s wife thanked her on social media for her sacrifice, the New York actress and their family posted Halloween photos of themselves dressed as “Rust” and their baby daughter to show their solidarity.

“Rust & I would like to send our deepest apologies to all of those who were offended by our costume last night at our home in New York. We never wanted to offend anyone. A serious conversation about gun control needs to be had, and we are certainly open to it,” Hilaria Baldwin wrote on Sunday.

“A message from me and my family — we are passionate about gun control and the issue of preventing gun violence. We and all of our families are deeply saddened about the recent gun violence that took place in Florida,” she added.

“We are a very private family. We choose to communicate through our writings, our works, our lives, and are completely dedicated to making the world a more wonderful place. We hope you know that we love you all very much and we all cherish life, we pray for each and every one of you, and we are deeply sorry for the way that we may have unintentionally offended you, especially during such a sensitive time. …”

Michael Douglas posted a photo on Instagram with a message for the victims. “I am beyond saddened, frustrated and furious right now that we have to live in this kind of world. We have to make real change. And it is you, the public, who can make this happen because this can’t happen to all of us,” Douglas wrote.
